A DEFINITION OF WEBSITE DESIGN: Website design is the presentation scheme, comprised of the theme and style of the website in consideration of that website's content and navigational requirements with respect to its purpose and intended audience and potential future expansion.

Many of my website design customers have an idea of the look and feel they want for their website. They often provide pictures and a description, plus examples of other websites they like. Other customers want me to show them some ideas of my own after providing me with a summary of theirs. Of course, some customers have a very definite design in mind, sometimes based upon another successful website, and sometimes on their own company brochure or image.

When designing a website, I research competing websites, niche, target audience, as well as professional standards for the category. I'll then make recommendations and suggestions based on that research before beginning a design.

Functionality and speed of delivery are, of course, primary considerations, but presentation aesthetics are critical to developing a design that achieves its purpose and goals, attracting, then keeping visitors interested and satisfied.

The trickiest part of website design is to develop a design in XHTML/CSS that renders well on all chosen website applications, dynamic or static, across a wide range of visitor variables. Those variables include operating systems, monitor resolutions, browser choices, and disability considerations.
